Late goals see Durham through to next round in FA County Youth Cup

    •

Having received a bye in the first round the County FA Under 18s travelled to Staveley Miners Welfare, Chesterfield to play a second round tie against Sheffield & Hallamshire CFA.

Following a minutes silence in respect for those killed in conflicts Durham kicked off and were soon on the attack and pegged back the home team defence without any penetration.

Sheffield weathered the early storm and in the 10th minute broke down their right hand side and from a perfect cross went into the lead.

Durham continued to press and despite having a large amount of possession failed to equalise.

Sheffield caught Durham a couple of more times on the break but failed to capitalise.

With half time looming Ryan Kirby played a long ball to Bailey Prudhoe who cut in from the left and fired in the equaliser from close range.

Durham began the second half brightly with Kieron Parnaby hitting the foot of the post in the 52nd minute but two minutes later Durham went into the lead when Craig Ellison capitalised on a defensive error to fire against the bar and Prudhoe followed in for his second of the game.

This only seemed to spur Sheffield & Hallamshire into action and within a fifteen minute spell the netted three goals from set pieces to lead 4 – 2.

Manager Jim Thompson made two substitutions taking off full backs to put on attacking players and this rallied the Durham lads who got back into the game in the 76th minute when Aaron Thompson netted from a goalkeeper save.

The Durham lads then swept forward with attack after attack and were awarded a penalty when Ellison was upended in the 84th minute and this was converted by Parnaby.

With extra time looming two goals in the 88th and 90th minute from Ellison and Prudhoe completing his hat trick put Durham into the third round and a tie away to Essex to be played on Saturday 9th December 2017.
