For the past few seasons two of our Schools FA’s have been running futsal leagues for boys in years 7-11 over the winter period to give their schools the chance to learn the game and in many cases give opportunities to players who do not already represent their school in football.
Gateshead Schools FA and Chester le Street/Washington/Derwentside Schools FA have both run central venue futsal leagues for U12, U14 and U16 boys which culminated in a finals event organised by Durham County FA on Monday 6th March 2017.
The finals event was sponsored by The Education Network who has supported the event since it started a few years ago. Kevin Gill from The Education Network explains the reasons behind their sponsorship ’Futsal is a format that is growing at a rapid rate and although I’ve been heavily involved in Football since being a kid, I actually only saw Futsal live for the first time last year. What I loved about it was the smaller pitch, emphasis on technique and high-scoring results, anyone of any level of age or fitness can give this game a go. The Education Network is proud to sponsor the Futsal finals this year and look forward to watching the sport grow.’’ Our continued sponsorship on these kind of events shows our commitment to supporting grass roots sports across the region”.
Congratulations to the following schools who won their finals:
U12 – Cardinal Hume Catholic School (Gateshead Schools FA)
U16 – Fyndoune Community College (CLS/Washington/Derwenstide Schools FA)
U14 – North Durham Academy (CLS/Washington/Derwenstide Schools FA)
In the 2017-18 season we will be looking to expand our schools futsal programme. Anyone interested in being involved please contact Tina Reed on 0191 3872928 or Tina.Reed@DurhamFA.com
