Sunderland have confirmed that the Stadium of Light will play host to an historic local cup final.
The Black Cats have reached the final of the Newton Moor Durham County Challenge Cup, where they will face Gateshead FC, and the club has agreed with Durham FA to stage the final at the Stadium of Light on Tuesday May 6.
Chairman Niall Quinn said: “It’s a fitting venue for what is a traditional, local cup competition, which we’re proud to host.
“Our reserves have come up against some plucky non-league opposition on the way to the final and I know Neil Bailey expects a tough game from Gateshead.
“I’m sure it will be a great occasion for Gateshead and an entertaining game for any football fan who comes along.”
Graham Wood, Chairman of Gateshead FC, said: “Everyone at Gateshead is looking forward to the game. Playing the final at such a prestigious venue is a real treat for our fans and players alike. Both sides play entertaining football which should make for a cracking match.
“Sunderland’s gesture in agreeing to hold the final at the Stadium of Light will be greatly appreciated by grass-roots football supporters throughout the area.”
Sunderland have beaten Jarrow Roofing (3-1), Wolviston (8-0), Norton and Stockton Ancients (6-1) and Horden CW (6-1) on their way to the final. Gateshead, who are currently third in the Unibond League Premier division, beat Spennymoor 1-0 after extra-time in their semi-final.
Durham County FA President Frank Pattison said: “This will be the first time the County Senior Cup has been held at the Stadium of Light and we are very grateful to the directors of Sunderland, and also Gateshead for agreeing. It’s hoped we’ll see a record attendance for the competition to witness the event!”
The final will be played on Tuesday May 6 (kick-off 7pm). Tickets are priced £5 adults and £2 concessions (Senior Citizens and Under 16’s), and are available from the SAFC ticket office and Durham County FA Headquarters or email info@durhamfa.com
